Questions DITs ask
Short answers about mmMover: what it costs, how it verifies, what it writes for post, and which cameras it handles.
Is mmMover really free?
Yes. No licence key, no subscription, no account. It is funded by voluntary donations and by productions that pay a contribution against an invoice.
Which systems does it run on?
Windows 10 and 11 (64-bit), and macOS 13 or later (beta; an Intel build that runs on Apple Silicon through Rosetta). Both write the same reports and ASC MHL.
How does mmMover verify a copy?
While copying, it computes an xxHash64 checksum of every file as it is read from the card. Then it reads every file back from every drive, bypassing the system cache, and compares. The card shows Safe to format only when everything matches.
Do I have to eject and reconnect the drives to verify?
No. mmMover reads the copies back from disk without the system cache, so the drives stay connected.
What is in the report?
An HTML and PDF report with thumbnails, codec, resolution, frame rate, duration, timecode and audio for every clip; JSON and TXT reports; a hash list; CSV and Avid ALE clip lists; and a day report across all cards.
Does mmMover write ASC MHL?
Yes, ASC MHL v2 in an ascmhl folder next to the media, so the backup can be verified later in Silverstack, ShotPut Pro or with the ascmhl tool.
Which cameras and formats does it support?
Copy and verification work for any file on the card. Clip analysis and proxies cover ProRes, H.264/H.265, XAVC, XF-AVC, DNx, Blackmagic RAW, ARRIRAW and RED R3D; RAW proxies use the free decoders from the camera makers.
Can it make proxies?
Yes: H.264, HEVC or ProRes, with the camera LUT picked from the clip metadata, burned-in clip name and timecode, and a timecode track for relinking in Resolve, Premiere or Avid.
Is my footage uploaded anywhere?
No. mmMover works locally between the card and your drives. Nothing about your media leaves your computer.
Can I see the source code?
Yes. The full source is public on GitHub, so you can check what mmMover does with your footage. It is source available, all rights reserved.
macOS blocks the app on first start. What do I do?
The Mac build is not signed with an Apple Developer ID yet. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security and click Open Anyway, then allow access to removable volumes when macOS asks.
Can my production pay by invoice?
Yes. Email me the company details and the amount and I will send a proper invoice. I am registered in the Czech Trade Register and not a VAT payer.
Who makes mmMover?
Lubomír Budín, a DIT, video operator and production manager from the Czech Republic. I build it with AI assistance and use it on my own shoots.
